When parents hear that their child has been referred to a pediatric cardiologist, uncertainty and worry often arise. An abnormal finding can quickly trigger the fear that something serious is wrong with your child's heart. With this article, we would like to allay these worries, provide reassurance and prepare you well for your first appointment with us.
Why was my child referred?
It is important to know that a referral to pediatric cardiology does not automatically mean that there is a serious heart condition. Common reasons for a clarification are a heart murmur, abnormalities during check-ups, shortness of breath, rapid fatigue, chest pain or a family history of heart disease. In most cases, everything turns out to be unremarkable, harmless or easily treatable.
If something is nevertheless detected, this will be discussed in detail with a doctor from our pediatric cardiology practice. Further action will be planned together or - if necessary - referred to specialist colleagues.
Arrival at our practice
In our specialist practice, patients with statutory health insurance require a referral slip, which must be brought with them every quarter. When you register, you register with your insurance card and referral slip, privately insured patients fill out a billing slip. If you already have medical reports, please bring them with you. They help our doctors to get a comprehensive picture of your previous cardiological situation. They will be scanned at the registration desk and returned to you afterwards.
The examination and the interview
After a short waiting period, the preliminary examination takes place. Height and weight are recorded, blood pressure and oxygen saturation are measured and an ECG is performed. These examinations are painless and only take a few minutes.
The doctor then performs a heart ultrasound (echocardiography) to assess the heart in detail and rule out any abnormalities. All examinations are non-invasive and parents or accompanying persons may be present at all times.
The appointment usually lasts 20-30 minutes, depending on the issue. At the end, the results are discussed in peace and quiet and all questions are answered.
