The first visit to the pediatric cardiology department - what parents and children can expect

An appointment with a pediatric cardiologist sounds exciting at first for many children (and sometimes also for their parents). Especially if they have already had negative experiences with hospitals or visits to the doctor. We look after children with heart disease from infancy to 18 years of age - and also adults with congenital heart defects. It goes without saying that a visit to our practice is sometimes perceived as "stupid". Younger children in particular need a little support to feel safe.

Preparation makes it easier

Good preparation helps enormously. If children know in advance what is going to happen, fears can be reduced. They don't feel "caught off guard" and are often much more cooperative during the examination. Of course, it is still different to actually experience the examination - but the mere fact that the child has heard or seen something about it before takes away a lot of uncertainty.

Tip: In one of our other blog posts you will find pictures and child-friendly explanations of the preliminary examination and cardiac ultrasound. You can go through these together with your child to prepare for the visit to the practice. We also regularly share exciting insights, photos and videos about our work and everyday life on our Instagram channel (@kinderherz.berlin).

This is how the preliminary examination works

So that you know what to expect: The examination consists of several small steps, all of which are not are painful.

  • First we measure weight and height.
  • Then we look at blood pressure and oxygen saturation.
  • An ECG is then performed, during which electrodes are attached to the body. This sometimes feels a little unfamiliar, but is completely harmless.
  • We then go on to the doctor, where an ultrasound of the heart is performed. We take a very close look at the heart - similar to an ultrasound scan during pregnancy.

Sometimes there is a brief pinch when the blood pressure cuff tightens around the arm or the electrodes "suck" slightly on the skin. But there is no pain.

Our goal: a relaxed atmosphere

We know how important it is to take away children's fears. That's why we take our time, explain each step sensitively and try to convey as much calm as possible. Our lovingly designed practice rooms are furnished to create a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. We want children (and parents) to feel safe and in good hands with us. Whether in the waiting room or the examination room.

Conclusion

The first visit to the pediatric cardiology department is a new step for many families - and sometimes also a challenge. However, with a little preparation, clear explanations and a trusting atmosphere, it is almost always possible to ease the children's tension. And then the visit to us is often no longer so "stupid" - but simply an important part of ensuring heart health.
